It seems like the classic punishment in school was getting sent to the corner. According to tradition, if you were sent to the corner you had to sit on a tall stool with a dunce cap on. Though I have to admit, even in the 1970's, I never saw one of these. If you were sent to the corner, there you had to stand. Many parents have used this punishment form also, standing with your nose in the corner. But lets face it, if you are sent to the corner today, it probably isn't empty. But has a corner desk in it with a nice computer, such as the latest iMac or PC. Yes, kids today love to sit in the corner.
As a matter of fact, often times you have to drag them away from the corner, what with all the computer games, chat, Facebook, social networking, shopping, email and other things that are at their fingertips, all while sitting at the corner desk. Punishment today, for some kids, is to be banned from the corner!
Hutches For Desks
We seem to be a society that collects a lot of stuff, so we have to learn to wisely use all the available space. So it is not surprising that there has been an increase in the number of furniture units that are designed to fit in the corner. The corner desk is just one of them, you can also find corner hutches, corner entertainment centers and sectional sofas that fit nicely where two walls come together. Our homes have many corners, so we might as well make the most of them. I know that I have a few stacks of stuff in a few of my corners, and it would be great to make better use of them than just a pile of junk.
One nice thing about a corner desk is that regardless of how much room you have in your corner, you can find a desk that will fit. If you only have the small corner, you can find a desk that will fit, with just enough room for your computer. Some of these will have a hutch on top with shelf space for books, discs, computer programs, etc. If you have room extending along one wall, then you can find a computer desk with a side extension. This is great because then you can have a surface for your computer, and a side surface for desk work. If you have a lot of room, you can get a corner desk that extends along both walls, and even more room if you put a hutch on top. This type of set up is perfect if you work at home and need the extra work space.
What's interesting is that the ultimate corner desk is found in offices all around the world today. As a matter of fact, offices purposely create corners for their desks. But they are not called corners, they are called cubicles or "cubbies". In these, the individual worker creates his own little home away from home to help him get through his work day. So maybe the corner is still a subtle form of punishment!
Well, no matter how you look at it, the corner is a very viable and usable space in your home. So if you have an empty corner, don't fill it with junk, but make it useful with a new corner desk.
